How to Use Windows Update for Updates

Windows Update is a built-in feature in Windows operating systems that allows you to download and install updates to improve the performance, security, and stability of your computer. In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to effectively use Windows Update to keep your system up to date.

Step 1: Accessing Windows Update

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard or click on the Start menu button located at the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  2. In the search box, type Windows Update and click on the Windows Update settings option from the search results. Alternatively, you can open the Control Panel and click on Windows Update.

Step 2: Configuring Update Settings

  1. Once the Windows Update settings window opens, click on the Advanced options link.
  2. In the Advanced options page, you can configure the following settings:
    • Choose how updates are installed: Here, you can select the way updates are downloaded and installed. The recommended option is Automatic (recommended), which ensures that updates are automatically downloaded and installed when available.
    • Choose how updates are delivered: This option allows you to enable or disable the option to receive updates from multiple sources, such as PCs on your local network or the internet. It is advisable to keep this option enabled for faster and more efficient updates.
    • Pause updates: If you want to temporarily pause updates, you can use this option to specify the number of days you wish to pause updates for.
  3. After configuring your preferred settings, click on the Back arrow to return to the main Windows Update settings page.

Step 3: Checking for Updates

  1. On the Windows Update settings page, click on the Check for updates button. Windows will now connect to the Microsoft servers and search for available updates.
  2. If updates are found, they will be displayed in a list. You can review the list and click on View optional updates to see optional updates that are available.
  3. To select the updates you want to install, click on the checkbox next to each update or use the Select all option to install all available updates.
  4. Once you are satisfied with your selection, click on the Install button to start the update process.

Step 4: Installing Updates

  1. Windows will now begin the installation process. The progress will be displayed on the screen.
  2. If required, your computer may restart multiple times during the installation process. It's important not to interrupt the restart process to ensure the updates are installed correctly.
  3. Once the installation is complete, you might be prompted to restart your computer to apply the updates. Click on the Restart now button to finalize the update.

Step 5: Managing Update History

  1. To view the history of installed updates, return to the Windows Update settings page.
  2. Click on the View update history link. You will see a list of all the updates that have been installed on your computer.
  3. You can click on any update to get more details about it, including the date and time of installation.
  4. To uninstall an update, click on the Uninstall updates option. This will open the Control Panel with a list of installed updates, allowing you to select and uninstall specific updates if needed.
