How to Use Windows Easy Transfer for Data Migration

Windows Easy Transfer is a built-in tool in Windows operating systems that allows users to transfer files, folders, user accounts, settings, and more from one computer to another. Whether you are upgrading to a new computer or replacing your existing one, Windows Easy Transfer simplifies the process of transferring your data. In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to use Windows Easy Transfer for data migration.

Prerequisites

Before starting the data migration process using Windows Easy Transfer, make sure you have the following:

  • Both the source and destination computers with a compatible version of Windows (Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10).
  • Sufficient storage space on an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or network location to store the transferred data.

Step 1: Open Windows Easy Transfer

  1. On your source computer, click on the Windows Start button located at the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  2. In the search bar, type Windows Easy Transfer and select the corresponding result.

Step 2: Choose the Transfer Method

  1. After opening Windows Easy Transfer, you will be presented with a welcome screen. Click on the Next button to proceed.
  2. Select the An external hard disk or USB flash drive option if you want to transfer your data using a compatible storage device. Alternatively, choose the A network option if you prefer to transfer your data over a network connection.

Step 3: Select the Migration Type

  1. In this step, you can choose between This is my old computer or This is my new computer options, depending on the scenario.
  2. Choose the This is my old computer if you want to transfer data from the source computer to the destination computer.
  3. Select the This is my new computer if you want to transfer data from another computer to the current computer.

Step 4: Connect the Storage Device

  1. If you selected the An external hard disk or USB flash drive option in Step 2, connect your storage device to the source computer.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to ensure the storage device is connected properly and detected by Windows.

Step 5: Choose What to Transfer

  1. Windows Easy Transfer will now analyze the available data on your source computer.
  2. Select the specific user accounts, files, folders, and settings you want to transfer to the destination computer.
  3. You can also click on the Advanced button to specify additional options for the transfer, such as excluding certain file types or customizing the transfer process.

Step 6: Initiate the Transfer Process

  1. After selecting the data you want to transfer, click on the Transfer button to begin the migration process.
  2. Windows Easy Transfer will start copying the required data to the specified storage device.
  3. The time taken to complete the transfer process depends on the amount of data being transferred.

Step 7: Transfer Data to the Destination Computer

  1. In case you used an external hard disk or USB flash drive for the transfer, safely eject it from the source computer once the transfer process completes.
  2. Connect the storage device to the destination computer.
  3. On the destination computer, open Windows Easy Transfer using the same steps mentioned in Step 1.
  4. Select the This is my new computer option as done previously and proceed to the next steps.

Step 8: Restore Data on the Destination Computer

  1. Windows Easy Transfer will detect the data on the connected storage device.
  2. Select the data you want to restore on the destination computer and click on the Transfer button.
  3. Windows Easy Transfer will start restoring the data from the storage device to the destination computer.
  4. Once the transfer process completes, you will have successfully migrated your data using Windows Easy Transfer.

Note: Windows Easy Transfer is not available in Windows 10. However, you can still use it when upgrading from an older version of Windows to Windows 10 by downloading an external tool provided by Microsoft.
