How to Use Universal Control with Multiple Devices

In this tutorial, we will learn how to take advantage of Universal Control, a powerful feature that allows you to seamlessly control multiple devices using a single keyboard and mouse. This feature is available across Apple devices, including Macs, iPads, and even the new iMac with the M1 chip. Universal Control makes it easier than ever to work across devices and increase productivity. Let's get started!

Prerequisites

Before we begin, ensure that you have the following:

  • Apple devices that support Universal Control (compatible macOS, iPadOS, and iOS versions).
  • Devices connected to the same network.
  • Bluetooth enabled and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Step 1: Set up Universal Control

To start using Universal Control, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure all your devices are powered on and running the latest compatible software.
  2. On your primary device (the one you want to control the others with), navigate to System Preferences (macOS) or Settings (iPadOS/iOS).
  3. On macOS, click on Displays. On iPadOS/iOS, tap on Display & Brightness.
  4. Enable the Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available option.

Step 2: Connect Devices

Once Universal Control is set up, you can connect your secondary devices:

  1. Place your secondary device (e.g., iPad) next to your primary device (e.g., Mac) within Bluetooth range.
  2. On your primary device, click on the AirPlay (rectangle with an arrow) icon in the menu bar (macOS) or Control Center (iPadOS/iOS).
  3. Choose Connect to [Device Name] - make sure it's the correct secondary device you want to connect.

Step 3: Start Controlling

With your devices connected, start controlling your secondary device using Universal Control:

  1. Move your cursor to the edge of your primary device's screen until it seamlessly transitions to the secondary device's screen.
  2. Your keyboard and mouse movements will now control the secondary device.
  3. To move back to the primary device, move your cursor beyond the edge of the secondary device's screen.

Step 4: Adjust Settings

Universal Control provides several customizable settings to enhance your experience:

  1. On the primary device, click on the Universal Control icon in the menu bar (macOS) or Control Center (iPadOS/iOS).
  2. Select the gear/cog icon to access Settings.
  3. Adjust settings like Handoff & Continuity, Cursor behavior, and Buttons and Gestures according to your preferences.

Step 5: Additional Tips

Here are some additional tips to maximize your Universal Control experience:

  • To copy and paste content between devices, simply copy on one device and paste on another.
  • You can control up to three devices simultaneously using Universal Control.
  • Ensure your devices have sufficient battery life or are connected to power sources for optimal performance.
  • Universal Control works both wired and wirelessly, but for the best experience, connect wirelessly.
