How to Use the Markup Extension in Photos

The Markup extension in the Photos app allows you to annotate and add various graphical elements to your photos. With Markup, you can highlight specific areas, add text, draw shapes, and even insert your signature. This tutorial will guide you through the process of using the Markup extension in Photos.

Note: Markup is available on both Mac and iOS devices. The steps provided here may vary slightly depending on your operating system, but the overall functionality remains the same.

Step 1: Opening a Photo in Markup

  1. Launch the Photos app on your device.
  2. Locate the photo you want to edit and double-click to open it in full-screen view.
  3. Click on the Edit button located at the top-right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Accessing the Markup Tools

  1. Once you are in editing mode, click on the Extensions button, which looks like three horizontally-aligned dots.
  2. From the available extensions list, click on Markup to launch the Markup tools.

Step 3: Annotating and Editing Your Photo

  1. After accessing Markup, you will see a toolbar at the bottom of the screen with various annotation tools.
  2. Here is a list of commonly used tools and how to use them:
    • Sketch Tool: Click the Sketch tool icon (looks like a pencil) and choose a color from the color picker at the bottom. You can then draw freehand on the photo by clicking and dragging.
    • Shape Tool: Click the Rectangle/Circle tool icon to choose between drawing rectangles and circles. Select the color from the color picker and use your mouse or trackpad to drag and draw the shape on the photo.
    • Text Tool: Click the Text tool icon (looks like a capital "T") and then click on the photo where you want to add text. A text box will appear where you can type in your desired text.
    • Loupe and Zoom Tool: Click the Loupe tool icon to zoom in on a particular area of the photo. You can adjust the size and position of the magnified area.
    • Signature Tool: Click the Signature tool icon (looks like a pen tip) to add your signature. You can draw your signature using your mouse or trackpad or use the built-in signature capture feature if available.
    • Color Picker Tool: Click the Color picker tool icon to choose the color for your annotations and drawings.
    • Undo and Redo: Use the Undo and Redo buttons at the top of the screen to undo or redo any changes you make.
    • Crop and Rotate: Use the Crop and Rotate buttons in the toolbar to crop or rotate your photo.
    • Save or Share Edits: Once you have finished editing your photo, click on the Done button at the top-right corner of the screen. You can then choose to save the edited photo or share it with others.

Step 4: Exiting Markup Mode

  1. After you have finished editing your photo, click on the Done button at the top-right corner of the screen.
  2. You will be taken back to the main editing interface in the Photos app. Click on the Done button once again to exit the editing mode.
