How to Use the Guest User Feature on Mac

The Guest User feature on Mac allows you to grant temporary access to your Mac to someone without compromising your personal data and settings. This guide will walk you through the steps to enable and use the Guest User feature on your Mac.

Enabling the Guest User Feature

  1. Open the "Apple" menu located at the top-left corner of your Mac's screen.
  2. Click on "System Preferences" from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the System Preferences window, click on the "Users & Groups" icon.
  4. Authenticate by clicking on the padlock icon at the bottom-left corner of the window and entering your administrator username and password.
  5. In the left sidebar, click on the "Guest User" account.
  6. Check the box that says "Allow guests to log in to this computer."
  7. You can customize the guest user settings by clicking on the "Login Options" button.

Using the Guest User Account

  1. To switch to the Guest User account, click on the Apple menu at the top-left corner of your Mac's screen.
  2. Select "Log Out Guest" and confirm the action.
  3. Your Mac will then log out of your current user account and present the Guest login screen.
  4. The Guest User account is now ready to be used.

Limitations and Considerations

It's important to note that the Guest User account has some limitations and considerations:

  • All data and changes made in the Guest User account are temporary and will be deleted upon log out. This means any files saved or modifications made will not be saved.
  • The Guest User account does not have access to any of your personal files, applications, or settings.
  • The Guest User account is unable to install software or make system changes.
  • Internet browsing history and downloads made by the Guest User are not saved upon log out.

Disabling the Guest User Feature

If you no longer want to allow guest access to your Mac, you can disable the Guest User feature by following these steps:

  6. Uncheck the box that says "Allow guests to log in to this computer."

Once the Guest User feature is disabled, no one will be able to log in using the Guest User account on your Mac.

Now you know how to enable, use, and disable the Guest User feature on your Mac. This feature comes in handy when you want to provide temporary access to someone while keeping your personal data secure.
