How to Use the Accessibility Keyboard

In this tutorial, we will explore how to use the Accessibility Keyboard, a powerful feature that allows individuals with limited mobility to interact with their computers using an on-screen keyboard. Whether you have difficulty using a physical keyboard or prefer an alternative input method, the Accessibility Keyboard can be a valuable tool for improving accessibility on your device. Step 1: Enable the Accessibility Keyboard

  1. Open the Settings app on your device.
  2. Tap on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down and select Keyboard.
  4. Under the Hardware Keyboard section, toggle on the Accessibility Keyboard option.

Step 2: Launch the Accessibility Keyboard

  1. Once you have enabled the Accessibility Keyboard, you can easily access it in various ways:
    • Method 1: Tap on the Keyboard icon in the top-right corner of the screen and select Accessibility Keyboard.
    • Method 2: If you have a physical keyboard connected, press the Fn key (function key) twice.
    • Method 3: If you have a Touch Bar on your MacBook, you can customize it to include the Accessibility Keyboard icon for quick access.

Step 3: Customize Accessibility Keyboard Settings

  1. Open the Accessibility Keyboard as mentioned in Step 2, Method 1.
  2. Tap on the Settings gear icon at the top-right corner of the keyboard.
  3. Here, you can customize several settings to suit your preferences:
    • Auto-Capitalization: Toggle this option on if you want the keyboard to automatically capitalize the first letter of each sentence.
    • Automatic Periods: Enable this option to insert a period when you double-tap the spacebar.
    • Key Repeat: Adjust the key repeat rate to control how quickly a key is repeated when pressed and held.
    • Sticky Keys: Toggle on this feature to allow key combinations (e.g., Ctrl + C) to be entered one key at a time.
    • Enable Number Panel: Turn this option on if you want to access a dedicated number pad.
    • Enable Emoji & Symbols Panel: Enable this option to access a wide range of emojis and symbols.

Step 4: Input Text Using the Accessibility Keyboard

  1. Once you have customized the settings, go back to the main Accessibility Keyboard screen.
  2. To type, simply tap on the keys displayed on the on-screen keyboard using your mouse, trackpad, or any other input device.

Step 5: Use Additional Features

  1. Predictive Text: The Accessibility Keyboard offers predictive text suggestions, making typing faster and easier. These suggestions appear on the top bar of the keyboard. Tap on the suggested word to insert it into your text field.
  2. Dictation: If you prefer using your voice, tap on the microphone icon on the Accessibility Keyboard to activate dictation. Speak clearly, and your words will be converted to text.
  3. Emoji & Symbols: To access emojis and symbols, tap on the smiley face icon on the keyboard. A panel with various emojis and symbols will appear. Tap on any item to insert it into your text.
