How to Set Up and Use Windows Themes and Personalization

Windows Themes and Personalization allow you to customize the appearance of your Windows desktop, including the background, colors, sounds, and icons. In this tutorial, we will walk you through the steps to set up and use Windows Themes and Personalization on your Windows PC.

Prerequisites

  • Windows PC running Windows 10 or later versions

Step 1: Accessing Themes and Personalization Settings

  1. Right-click on an empty area of your desktop.
  2. From the context menu that appears, select Personalize.
  3. This will open the Settings app with the Personalization category selected by default.

Step 2: Choosing a Theme

  1. In the Personalization settings, click on the Themes tab in the left sidebar.
  2. Browse through the available themes or click on the Get more themes online link to explore additional options.
  3. To preview a theme, simply click on it. This will give you an idea of how your desktop will look with that theme applied.
  4. To apply a theme, click on the Apply button below the theme preview.

Step 3: Customizing Themes

  1. After applying a theme, you can further customize it by clicking on the Background, Color, Sounds, or Mouse cursor options in the left sidebar of the Personalization settings.
  2. Background: Select a new background image by clicking on the Browse button and choosing an image from your computer. You can also set the image position, fill type, and presentation mode.
  3. Color: Choose a color scheme for your windows, taskbar, and Start menu. You can select a predefined color or create a custom color combination by clicking on the Custom color option.
  4. Sounds: Customize the sounds played by Windows for various events. You can choose from existing sound schemes or browse for custom sound files on your computer.
  5. Mouse cursor: Change the appearance of your mouse cursor by selecting a different cursor scheme from the available options.

Step 4: Creating Your Own Theme

  1. If you want to create a theme with your own customized settings, start by following Steps 1 and 2 to access the Themes tab.
  2. Click on the Theme settings link located below the list of themes.
  3. In the Theme Settings window, click on the Save theme button.
  4. Give your theme a name and click Save.
  5. Now your customized theme will appear in the My Themes section of the Themes tab.

Step 5: Adjusting Advanced Personalization Settings

  1. While in the Personalization settings, you may want to explore the Lock screen, Taskbar, and Start options to further customize your Windows experience.
  2. Lock screen: Change the background image, slideshow settings, quick status, and app status on the lock screen.
  3. Taskbar: Customize the behavior and appearance of the taskbar, including its position, size, icon arrangement, and more.
  4. Start: Personalize the Start menu by choosing options such as tile display, full-screen mode, app list appearance, and more.
