How to Set Up and Use Windows HomeGroup for Sharing Files

Windows HomeGroup is a feature that allows you to easily share files, folders, and printers between computers on the same network. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of setting up and using Windows HomeGroup on your PC.

Prerequisites

  • Windows 7, 8, or 10 operating system.
  • Two or more computers connected to the same network.

Setting Up Windows HomeGroup

Step 1: Open HomeGroup Settings

  1. Access the Control Panel on your computer by pressing the Windows key and typing "Control Panel" in the search bar. Then, click on the Control Panel app to open it.
  2. In the Control Panel, search for "HomeGroup" using the search box located at the top right corner.
  3. Click on the "HomeGroup" option in the search results to open the HomeGroup settings.

Step 2: Create a HomeGroup

  1. In the HomeGroup settings window, click on the "Create a HomeGroup" button. If a HomeGroup already exists on your network, skip to the next step.
  2. Choose the content you want to share with other devices on your HomeGroup by ticking the checkboxes beside the respective options: Pictures, Videos, Music, Documents, and Printers.
    • You can also click on the "More libraries" button to include additional folders in your HomeGroup.
  3. After selecting the content to share, click on the "Next" button.

Step 3: Note Down HomeGroup Password

  1. On the next screen, a HomeGroup password will be generated. Note down this password or click on the "Print this page" button to get a physical copy.
  2. The password is required to join the HomeGroup on other devices.

Joining the HomeGroup

Now that you have created a HomeGroup, you can join it from other computers on the same network.

Step 4: Join the HomeGroup

  1. On another computer connected to the same network, open the HomeGroup settings as explained in Step 1.
  2. Click on the "Join Now" button.
  3. Windows will search for available HomeGroups on the network. Once it finds the HomeGroup you created, click on "Next".
  4. Enter the HomeGroup password you noted down in Step 3 and click on "Next".

Using the HomeGroup

Now that you've successfully joined the HomeGroup, you can easily share files, folders, and printers between the computers connected to the HomeGroup.

Step 5: Sharing Files and Folders

  1. Navigate to the file or folder you want to share.
  2. Right-click on the file/folder and select "Share with" from the context menu.
  3. Choose "HomeGroup (Read)" or "HomeGroup (Read/Write)" depending on the level of access you want to grant.
  4. The file/folder is now shared and visible to other computers in the HomeGroup.

Step 6: Accessing Shared Files and Folders

  1. On a computer connected to the same HomeGroup, open File Explorer.
  2. In the navigation pane, click on "HomeGroup" to view the shared files and folders.
  3. Double-click on the desired file/folder to access it.

Step 7: Sharing Printers

  1. Open the Control Panel on the computer that has the printer connected.
  2. Search for "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel search box.
  3. Under "Printers," right-click on the printer you want to share and select "Printer properties" from the context menu.
  4. In the printer properties window, navigate to the "Sharing" tab.
  5. Select "Share this printer" and provide a descriptive name for the printer.
  6. Click on "Apply" and then "OK" to save the settings.

Step 8: Accessing Shared Printers

On the computers connected to your HomeGroup, follow these steps to access the shared printer:

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Click on "Hardware and Sound".
  3. Under "Devices and Printers," click on "Add a printer".
  4. Select "The printer that I want isn't listed".
  5. Choose "Select a shared printer by name" and enter the network path of the printer (e.g., \computername\printername).
  6. Click "Next" and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Note: Windows HomeGroup feature has been deprecated starting from Windows 10 version 1803. Therefore, if you are using a newer version of Windows, consider alternative methods such as OneDrive, Network Sharing, or Shared Folders for file sharing.
