How to Set Up and Use the Markup Tool in Mail

The Markup tool in Mail allows you to easily annotate and add drawings, text, signatures, and more to images and PDFs that you receive via email. This guide will walk you through the process of setting up and using the Markup tool within the Mail app on your device.

Setting Up Markup in Mail

  1. Launch the Mail app on your device and open an email that contains an image or a PDF attachment.

  2. Tap on the attachment to open it.

  3. Once the attachment is open, tap on the "Markup" icon, usually represented by a pencil or a marker, located at the top-right corner of the screen.

  4. If you don't see the Markup icon, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the toolbar, and then tap on the "Markup" icon.

  5. A toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen, providing you with various annotation tools.

  6. Tap on each tool to familiarize yourself with its functionality. These tools include a pen, highlighter, eraser, text, signature, magnifier, and more.

  7. To customize the appearance of the tools, tap on the color palette icon, usually located near the bottom-left corner of the screen. Choose your desired colors for drawing, highlighting, and text.

  8. Optionally, tap on the "+" icon to access additional tools like shapes, arrows, and a ruler.

Using Markup in Mail

  1. To start annotating an image or PDF, select the desired tool from the toolbar and simply start drawing on the content.

  2. You can adjust the thickness or opacity of the pen or highlighter by tapping on the respective tool and using the sliders that appear.

  3. Use the eraser tool to remove any annotations or parts of your drawing. Simply select the eraser tool and swipe over the area you want to erase.

  4. To add text, tap on the "T" icon and then tap on the location where you want to place the text. A text box will appear, allowing you to enter and edit the desired text.

  5. To add your signature, tap on the signature icon (usually represented by a cursive "S") and choose to either create a new signature using your finger or Apple Pencil, or select a pre-existing signature stored in your device.

  6. If you want to add shapes or arrows, tap on the "+" icon and select the desired shape. You can customize the color, size, and position of the shape as needed.

  7. The magnifier tool allows you to magnify a specific area, making it easier to add intricate details. Tap on the magnifier tool and drag it over the area you want to magnify.

  8. Once you've finished annotating and making changes, tap on the "Done" or "Save" button, usually located at the top-right corner of the screen.

  9. You can then choose to save the annotated image or PDF as a new file, or replace the original attachment with the annotated version by selecting the appropriate option.

  10. The annotated image or PDF can now be sent by email or saved to your device.

Congratulations! You have successfully set up and used the Markup tool in the Mail app. Enjoy annotating and adding creative touches to your images and PDFs directly from your email inbox.
