The Handoff feature is a useful capability that allows you to seamlessly switch between compatible Apple devices while working on tasks such as emails, documents, web browsing, and more. This feature ensures continuity and accessibility across your Apple ecosystem. In this tutorial, we will explain how to enable and use the Handoff feature on your Apple devices.

Prerequisites

  • Apple devices running iOS 8 (or later) or macOS Yosemite (or later).
  • All devices must be connected to the same iCloud account and connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  • Handoff must be supported by the specific app you want to use across devices.

Enabling Handoff on iOS Device

  1. Unlock your iOS device's screen.
  2. Open the Settings app from the home screen.
  3. Scroll down and tap on General.
  4. Tap on Handoff & Suggested Apps.
  5. Toggle the Handoff switch to the right to enable it (the switch will turn green).

Enabling Handoff on macOS Device

  1. Open the Apple menu on your macOS device.
  2. Click on System Preferences.
  3. Click on General.
  4. Ensure that the checkbox next to Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices is checked.

Using Handoff to Switch Between Devices

Now that Handoff is enabled on your Apple devices, you can effortlessly switch between them while working on supported apps.

iOS to macOS Device:

  1. Begin working in a supported app on your iOS device, like Mail or Safari.
  2. Look for the app icon on the bottom-left of your macOS device's lock screen, Dock, or the App Switcher (accessible by pressing Command + Tab).
  3. Tap on the app icon to open it in the same context as on your iOS device.

macOS to iOS Device:

  1. Start working in a supported app on your macOS device.
  2. Locate the app icon at the bottom-right of your iOS device's lock screen or double-tap the Home button.
  3. Tap on the app icon to open it on your iOS device with the same content and context.

Note:

  • Ensure that Bluetooth is enabled on your devices and Wi-Fi is connected for Handoff to function properly.
  • Some apps may require you to sign in to your accounts on each device separately before using Handoff.
  • Handoff does not support all apps, so make sure the app you want to use supports this feature.

Congratulations! You have successfully enabled and learned how to use the Handoff feature on your Apple devices. Enjoy the convenience of seamlessly switching between your iOS and macOS devices while working on supported apps with Handoff.
